Who was Winston Churchill? Sir Winston Churchill, is known for being a charismatic prime minister of The United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945and again from 1951 to 1955.

His inspiring speeches and refusal to give up successfully lead The United Kingdom through world war 2. Mr Churchill was also an avid horse lover, he grew up riding horses and did it both for leisure, sports (polo) and in battle. He also bred thoroughbreds for racing. The story of Churchill’s life and his love for horses were made into a book by Brought Scott in 2018 – ‘Churchill at the Gallop: Winston’s Life in the Saddle’. Thanks to Churchill – 62,000 horseswere saved from starvation and brought back to England from Europa following world war 1.

Did Winston Churchill have horses? Indeed he did – he bred thoroughbred horses for racing and owned many horses during his lifetime. His most famous horse is the french bred thoroughbred Colonist II. The stallion won 13 out of 24 races and was a national favorite. Despite Mr Churchill’s busy schedule, he always tried to attend Colonist II’s races.

This horse quote is popular amongst horse lovers. The wise words were allegedly written by Winston S. Churchill. The quote is a summary of his famous paragraph in his autobiography ‘My Early Life’ released in 1930. The paragraph reads:

“Don’t give your son money; as far as you can afford it, give him horses. No one ever came to grief through riding horses. No hour of life is lost that is spent in the saddle. Young men have often been ruined through owning horses or through backing horses, but never through riding horses. Unless, of course, they break their necks. Which, taken at a gallop, is a very good death to die.” 

Winston preferred to spend his little spare time on the back of a horse, great things happen to a man when a horse gallops.
